Scarborough Spa Bridge
Pictured below is a postcard sent on the 8th September 1908. The postcard shows, what was, the entrance to Scarborough Spa. This postcard is one of my favourites. It shows Scarborough on a summer day in its heyday with a mass of entertainments being enjoyed by a large throng of Edwardian tourists. The postcard itself is a superb piece of printing. It is one of the (then common) real photograph cards. Printed by local company Dennis & Holloway Heraldic Stationers it show Scarborough as 'The Queen of Watering Places'. Compare this with the more modern view below.

Crowds on the beach line up to watch the beach acts - usually Pierot troupes

A close up of the bridge shows Ladies & Gents stroling along towards the Spa. The seperate footbridge section can be seen on the right.

A customer passes the turnstile after crossing the footbridge

Clearly visible on this postcard is the entrance to the underground Peoples Palace and Aquarium

A man studies the entertainment posters for today

Another well known entertainment the camera obscura

This group of men have a chinwag alongside the large telescope at the base of the picture

The addition of the Cliff Lift in 1929 was the last improvement to this area.

The area under the bridge was redeveloped in the late 1960's

The most recent postcard of this area which shows the demise of the area as an entertainment centre.
